Optimizing production processes for logistics enterprises through the application of technology

Thanks to the application of Industry 4.0 technology, logistics enterprises can optimize production processes, reducing the time to fulfill orders through the application of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing...

Lecturer in Supply Chain Management and Logistics at RMIT University Vietnam's School of Business, Dr. Scott McDonald, notes that the surge of new technology, especially AI, implies that logistics enterprises need to swiftly change their operational methods; otherwise, they might lose business opportunities to entities that have already implemented transformations.

However, change isn't simple. Following 2019 and the pandemic period, logistics businesses are facing resource shortages, financial challenges, and the complexity of widely applying new technology.

To overcome these difficulties, enterprises need to meticulously combine new ideas with robust capabilities to sustain operations. Businesses aiming for balance and change in the current landscape will require intelligent leadership and adaptable adjustments.

The RMIT University Vietnam's 2022 study indicates that more than 80% of the labor force in the logistics industry is trained through vocational training programs, meaning they don't receive formal pre-training.

Another study highlights that the shortage of skilled labor poses a barrier to implementing information technology in Vietnam's logistics companies (approximately 37.1% of surveyed companies). Additionally, financial constraints hinder their ability to adopt these computer systems – a problem faced by 50.5% of businesses in the study.

Around 95% of Vietnamese logistics companies are considered small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), often limited in capital and still in the initial stages of applying information technology. This makes it challenging for them to improve their businesses through technology implementation. Moreover, these enterprises often use different software systems, making integration difficult. This will hinder connections with crucial links in the logistics process such as customs or ports.
